Summary of Role
The Technical Operations Director will play the pivotal role in managing a skilled team who over time will be responsible for all technical product environments managed by Insurance Technology. These environments will support our Insurance Consulting and Technology (ICT) software and solutions for consumption by internal ICT staff and external clients.
Many of these environments will be hosted or transitioned to Microsoft Azure public cloud using our ICT Azure enrolment, but a number may be hybrid or hosted within traditional on-premise WTW data centers.
The Technical Operations Director and the team will be responsible for ensuring the environments are designed, built and run in robust, secure and scalable manners to best support the applications and solutions.
The Role
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Technical Operations Director will include:
Leading implementation and run teams tasked with building and the ongoing run (including patching, change control etc) of technical environments
Defining best practices around Environment and Operational Design, for example Monitoring, Deployment, Change and Incident Management
Working closely with ICT Engineering leads and Solution Architects to ensure that applications and solutions are designed with operational state front of mind, reducing cost and risk of running in production environments
Liaising with Corporate IT and Information Security to ensure that standards and requirements around infrastructure and policies are understood and adopted
Implement and update Environment and Operational Design practices, and select common frameworks or tools to perform tasks (e.g. Puppet, Azure App Insights etc)
To be at the forefront of latest Operational technologies, especially within Microsoft Azure.
Act as final sign off for completion or handover of environments for our Operations team to run
Being a key escalation point in the event of Security and Incident Management. This may require activities outside of typical working hours
Oversee cost analysis and management information regarding our environments, providing periodic reports to the Head of Technical Support Operations (TSO) Escalation point for 3rd line TSO support cases that revolve around, or are dependent on the performance of our environments
Act as a primary member of the TSO Leadership Team, imparting awareness, experience and best practice for the Leadership Team to make key strategic and escalation decisions
The Requirements
Proven track record of running large technical teams looking after environments, some of which will be on different time zones
Strong knowledge of cloud technologies and hosting provisions, ideally Microsoft Azure
Accreditation in ITIL and Azure (e.g. 70-732, AZ-100, AZ-101) advantageous
Experience in managing a globally diverse function
Ability to transition between operating at a strategic level to the specific detail of a technical issue or process
Success with working with senior external stakeholders
Ability to identify and drive continuous improvement
Ability to navigate the internal workings of a global organization to ensure delivery where not all functions report directly under their control
Working with clients when required to resolve serious issues
